A day after TV persona Jon Stewart blasted lawmakers for his or her inaction, the Home Judiciary Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to lengthen the compensation fund for police, firefighters and numerous first responders to the 11th of September attack websites.

The September 11th Sufferer Compensation Fund used to be established in 2011 to abet first responders whose diseases and deaths were linked to their publicity to toxic substances they encountered on the World Change Heart, on the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa.

But the Fund is nearing depletion. As NPR reported:

“The $7.three billion fund has already paid out about $5 billion to 21,000 claimants. But it unruffled has about 19,000 additional unpaid claims to address.

“With resources impulsively dwindling, the fund said any pending claims will seemingly be paid at 50 percent of their prior fee. Claims acquired after Feb. 1 of this year will seemingly be paid at 30 percent.”

Stewart, who has long championed the motive on the back of the first responders, criticized Congress for not extending the program, telling lawmakers “you needs to be ashamed of yourselves.”

“Al-Qaida did not bellow loss of life to Tribeca — they attacked The usa, and these girls and males folk and their response to it’s a ways what brought our nation back,” Stewart said.

The invoice, which would lengthen the compensation fund to 2090, now goes to the plump Home for consideration, where it’s a ways anticipated to pass. Its future in the Senate is not definite.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York urged the chamber’s Republican leadership to elevate the invoice up for a vote as rapidly as that probabilities are you’ll perhaps perhaps be ready to evaluate of.

“We will have the option to reach the point rapidly, in all likelihood this year, when more can believe died from 11th of September-connected diseases than on 11th of September itself,” Schumer said.
